Identifying Colors and numbers

Please google for latest articles on this. I did not note down the link of where I read this.

Identifying colors:

One day your toddler may point to red color and say red but the next day they may point to red color and say blue. This can be confusing because based on observation, you can see that kid can identify colors but on some days would use incorrect colors.

Color is a property

Your kid probably may know colors, but not expressive yet, since kid does not know that color is a property by itself and not a property of an object.

Simply changing how you identify colors and how you speak about colors to your kid will make a difference in learning about colors.

E.g 1: instead of saying ‘red car’, say ‘that car’s **color** is red’.

E.g.2: instead of ‘blue sky’ say, “today the sky’s **color** is blue.”-

In this way, kid will gradually get to know that red is not property of the car, instead the red is a type of color. – this way kid clearly understands that red, blue etc. are types of color and not types of car or sky.

Avoid quizzing

In Montessori and other respectful parenting methods, quizzing kids is not recommended. Hence instead of asking ‘hey what color is this car’ continue to use colors in your regular discussions.

e.g. Oh, the color turned red, now I have to stop.
Ah look at that tree, the color of the leaves is green.

Someday, the kid might surprise you by including the color in their normal conversation with you.

Note:

  • In case of concerns, always reach out to pediatrician.
  • Also wanted to add that I have seen humans lead normal life with color blindness. Hence if this is something the child is going through, find resources to support them and yourself through this journey.
  • Kindly avoid using ableist language and choose an inclusive language
