Book Name: Busy busy busy by Haneul Ddang
Why I love this book:
This is a very sneaky book that encourages you to learn patterns without forcing you to learn patterns. Basically replacing boring non-engaging text books with fun filled story. By the time you finish reading the book, you are mostly probably and unconsciously reciting and finishing the patterns that are yet to be built.
If you are reading this aloud, definitely use funny voices and sing and dance wherever appropriate. I consider it a sin to read these books without exaggerated voices and expressions.
Age group: good to use once your kid is verbal and can start speaking simple sentences.
follow-up activities: you can use your existing manipulatives, or objects in your life to show patterns.
Other notes: Not Montessori, since animals are really stretching it thin here. You can always start by saying, this is fictional story and not real since animals do not do x, y z etc.
Disclaimers:
Why is disclaimer bigger than book review? – these books are specific to certain topics, hence trying to make sure you get the right benefit before investing in them and here goes the tirade of disclaimers.
- The post is titled ‘books “”I”” love’, meaning I loved reading these books. I was not privileged to have access to these amazing resources as a kid so I get to enjoy this privilege now. Point being, if your kiddo does not like reading this book, then take a break, bring it few weeks later and try again
- To maximize the privilege, I heavily rely on lending programs (library) or getting used books (local book exchanges, buying used books etc.) for few reasons including:
- Kids may lose or not show interest in books and books would end up unused.
- Avoid adding more to landfill
- reduce guilt when buying more books
- Please do check if you have any of these facilities nearby and highly encourage to leverage them for books mentioned in these posts.
- As much as possible rotate or donate once you are done using them.
- Note: social media does increase our buying habits unconsciously, and many social networks are mainly for driving sales. This post does not have any hidden links, purely sharing for reading joy – spreading the joy! (once again, look for used books or lending programs to curb purchase addiction – (ahem, look who is talking… ahem, moving on)
- highlight reel – remember social media posts are most probably highlight reels, you are doing great job at adulting or parenting, even if you are not sure what you are doing!!!
